Appalachian  Spring Suite
Aaron Copland 25 minutes

Appalachian Spring Suite, from Martha Graham's Pulitzer-winning ballet brings joyous rhythmic dance, pastoral meditation, and melodies wrapped in an Americana sound that celebrate a quiet life of simple joys.

Iconic selections from Christopher Larkin’s score to Hollow Knight are orchestrated as a prelude of contrast. Scenes of Hallownest and Sealed Vessel present more earthier soundscapes, sorrowful melodies, and dense harmonies meant to accompany heavier themes of fate, determination, and redemption. Like darkness before dawn, these orchestrations make the sunrise of Appalachian Spring shine brighter and amplify the optimistic warmth of Copland’s score.

Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet is driven by bold, adventurous themes much like those found in video game scores. The vigor of this material complements Larkin’s, and the cheerier tones of the nonet provide a brief respite from the tragic drama of Hallownest.
